Offshore Marine Contractors in co-operation with Bugsier Reederei and the Marine Training Centre Hamburg (MTC) has set up a training course to provide extra guidance on offshore towage to the nautical crews of Bugsier’s tugs. The course is an extra step in Bugsier’s training programme which starts with harbour assistance, towage, salvage and now concludes with offshore towage. As the Bugsier tug Captains and Mates frequently interact with OMC Towmaster’s during offshore operations, the request was made to OMC to prepare a course for additional guidance.
The MTC Hamburg houses a simulation centre where offshore towage and positioning situations can be accurately and realistically simulated.
The 1 day course for Bugsier’s Captains and Mates consists of a theory session where offshore practices are explained along with operational practices, procedures, paperwork, communication, and legal matters. The theory is then brought into practice using the tug simulators available. These consist of 3 bridges where 3 different Bugsier tug models can be operated, With the OMC Towmaster in command combined with the MTC instructor the offshore exercises and situations can be realistically recreated and put into practice.
The course started in 2014 at the MTC in Hamburg and throughout 2014 / 2015 a total of 16 courses have been successfully performed in a professional co-operation between all 3 parties.
